The
northernmost
part of the Cotswolds edges into Warwickshire and centres
around on the old sheep market town of Shipston-on-Stour, which derives
its name from the Anglo-Saxon "Scepwaeisctune" meaning
"Sheep-wash-town".
This rural part of southern Warwickshire is located on the River Stour
between Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford and was once
an important stopping place for stagecoaches.
The fall in demand for wool in the early 19th century resulted in a
general decline in the prosperity in the area. This fortuitously
limited its ‘modernisation’ over
the years and so preserved the beauty of the towns and countryside. The
original wool trade prosperity is, however, still
reflected in the finely preserved Georgian
buildings in wonderfully mellow, honey-coloured Cotswold
stone.
