ACCOMMODATION IN & AROUND RUGBY

The market town of Rugby was first settled in the Iron Age and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ‘Rocheberie’.

Modern-day Rugby is most famous for the invention of Rugby football. Legend has it that the game was invented by William Webb Ellis in 1823 at Rugby School, one of England's oldest and most prestigious public schools and the setting of Thomas Hughes's masterpiece ‘Tom Brown's Schooldays’. There is a museum at the school with audio-visual displays about the history of the school and the town. There is also a Rubgy Football Museum in the town, where traditional rugby balls are hand made.

Rugby is also where, in April 1937, Sir Frank Whittle built the world's first prototype jet engine.
