Kenilworth
is
perhaps best known for the magnificent Kenilworth Castle, immortalised
by Sir Walter Scott in his eponymous novel. Other significant local
landmarks include Kenilworth Clock, Abbey Fields and St Nicholas'
Church.
Kenilworth has been around since at least the time of the Domesday Book
of 1086, where it is referred to as 'Chinewrde'. The main development
of the town began with Kenilworth Castle and St Mary's Abbey which were
started in 1140. The Castle was expanded to its current format by
Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester, who nearly bankrupted himself
preparing for a visit by Queen Elizabeth 1.
In the shadow of the castle walls is an area known as Little Virginia
(recently been renovated and restored), where the first potato grown in
England, brought back from South America by Sir Walter Raleigh, is
reputed to have been planted.
